How I Teach
How I Teach: Little and Often
Children remember a method far better when they practise it for a short time every day than when they do it all in one go. I build every programme around that idea.
One Long Session vs. a Minute a Day
Picture a child spending 45 minutes on maths homework, then forgetting it until the teacher asks for it a week later.
Now picture learning a French word, la voiture (“car”). Repeat it for 10 minutes once and you’ll probably struggle to recall it a week later. Practise it for one minute each day and you’ll remember it easily.
What This Looks Like for the 11+
The 11+ maths test has many new methods, such as increasing an amount by a percentage. Rather than a whole practice sheet in one sitting, I suggest one or two questions a day. Children keep the method longer, use it more readily, and don’t tire themselves out.
Try It This Week
Split the next piece of homework across several days instead of doing it all the night before. Over time you’ll notice the difference.
