Why choose M Bower Tutoring?
You get a practising primary teacher, groups of 7 or fewer, and an excellent record of pupils winning grammar school places. Small groups let children learn from and encourage each other, and friendships often carry on at grammar school.
How do I know if my child is suitable for the 11+?
Your child should be above average in reading, writing and maths. Ask their class teacher, who knows them far better than a short entry test can. They also need to cope with weekly homework and genuinely want to sit the exam.
How do the lessons work?
One 70-minute lesson a week at YMCA Plymouth, Honicknowle Lane, PL5 3NG, opposite All Saints school. Please arrive 5 minutes early. We focus on the methods behind each type of 11+ question in maths and English.
What is the programme over the year?
Core skills from late September to February, harder material from February, multiple-choice 11+ papers from late May, and mainly exam practice from June until the September exam. Boys also practise essay writing.
Can you guarantee a grammar school place?
No, nobody honestly can. Competition is tough, so keep a second-choice school you're happy with. I will give your child the best possible chance.
Do you tutor in the school holidays?
Yes, including summer. Children often slip back between July and September, so keeping momentum before a September exam is vital. I'll tell you in advance about any weeks I'm away.
How do I register for the Plymouth 11+?
Girls register through Plymouth City Council; boys register through DHSB. The exam is held on two Saturdays in September. Mock exams run in June or July and are booked through the grammar school.
What do you provide?
Exercise books, paper, pencils, worksheets and weekly homework with answer sheets. Marking the homework at home and talking through mistakes makes a big difference.
What if my child misses a lesson?
They can join the lesson on Zoom.
Are you DBS checked and insured?
Yes. I hold an enhanced DBS certificate and public liability insurance.
